Meet the Board

Q & A with Ron Stanley

Position on the Board: President
Company: Empire Bolt & Screw - Spokane, WA

How did you get started in the fastener industry?
Being a second-generation in this industry, I was around six years old when I was paid to fold boxes at home. I was paid by the number of boxes I folded and it seemed like a lot of money to me then!

What is the best advice you ever got?
“Go to college and get a degree.  Then work in another business before settling in the fastener industry.”  This was advice from my father and after getting a Bachelor's Degree in Science in Mechanical Engineering, then starting a career with IBM, he began to get worried that I might never want to leave!  That changed 7 years after working for IBM however!

Do you have a personal goal for 2020?
The best way to address this question is to ask the question, how many times have your personal goals changed in 2020? I am settling on being sure to keep a positive outlook and do my best to accept things the way they are dished out and make the most of it!

What inspires you?
Seeing someone who has overcome hardship, disability, or injury and seemingly not lose a step on their journey.  In addition, I find that watching our new grandbaby growing and developing gives me a different outlook for the future and purpose.

When you were a child, what did you want to be as a grown-up?
I wanted to be a doctor, for sure!  In fact in college, I could have used my engineering degree to get admitted into a medical school, but by then I felt I wanted to get away from college and start making money!

What do you do when you're not at work?

I like to golf, but don’t do that often enough.  I enjoy fixing things even if it is something unfamiliar to me.  Part of that is I am intrigued with how things work.  I love to read and enjoy doing just that when I travel.  Speaking of travel, we love to explore and were starting to do more of that when the virus hit.  And I should also mention I enjoy collecting and drinking some great wines and pairing them to various foods and sauces!

What is your favorite vacation destination?

For a regular vacation, it is Cabo San Lucas without question.  I love the people, the culture, the food, the ocean, and the total relaxation in traveling to our “home away from home.”

What TV show did you binge most recently?

I do not watch much TV at all.  When I do, I have enjoyed Bull and the NCIS shows.

Who is your favorite singer or group?

I listen to country music more than any other genre, but I enjoy smooth jazz, instrumental, and any music with great harmony and talented musicians playing all kinds of instruments.  My favorites usually are more song related than they are “group” or “singer” and tend to change with time.

Do you have a personal message you'd like to share with Pac-West and the industry?

These are unprecedented times as we all know and as your association, we continue to look for various ways we can provide you value.   I can assure you your Board is very dedicated and interested in finding creative ways to give you what you have experienced before from your membership with Pac-West.  If you have any ideas yourself, please feel free to pass them along to Vickie, Amy, or Jamie.

We also look forward to getting together at a conference in the future where we can see each other’s faces again and share a meal and stories!  We just want to do that when it is comfortable for everyone involved!
